Client Background & Role Summary:

Our client is one of the top telecommunications company in Australia. They provide a diverse range of communication services to residential users, wholesale customers, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), government and large corporate enterprises. They have recently set up a Regional IT team in Malaysia to provide IT support to the Australian region. They are looking for Database Administrator (2 headcounts).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Database Administration
    • Plan and oversee (in liaison with other service teams and staff) of database installations, upgrades and patches, back-ups and recovery, databases and objects
    • Monitor and tune database for optimal performance
    • Collaborate with Developers for Technical design and review of database objects as required
    • Create and maintain database design templates and requirements documents for Information Services department
    • Develop, document, and implement security configuration for databases to comply with good practice
    • Provide high quality DBA services to both the development and production environment, including on-call support outside normal business hours
  • Quality Assurance and Testing
    • With a focus at a database level, implement testing of new database objects and any database changes
    • Respond to reported problems with a timely resolution or problem escalation as appropriate
    • Conduct cross checks on database changes to ensure all live changes are accurate
    • Evaluate proposed changed to databases and products and work with colleagues to ensure appropriate testing is carried out
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Identify and propose database and architectural improvements to existing systems
    • Identify and introduce industry Best Practice standards in all project, work requests and responsibilities
    • Seek to educate team members and stakeholders about Best Practice where appropriate
  • Work Planning and Management
    • Manage daily tasks and projects to ensure work is completed consistent with assigned priorities and deadlines
    • Identify resource and time requirements of requested work to produce project plans and timelines
    • Evaluate work requests on a technical, architectural and consistency level to provide feedback to stakeholders on viability
    • Participate in planning meetings as required
    • Initiate and attend meetings with team and stakeholders to give timely updates on work progress and resolution of issues
    • Report progress to team and Development Manager as appropriate
  • Data Management and Reporting
    • Collate statistics to provide progress and performance reports as required
    • Implement appropriate level of reporting to management on technical and nontechnical issues


  • Tertiary qualification in Computer Science or Software Engineering
  • 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrate advanced expertise in / understanding of:
    • Database architecture, including Oracle, MySQL, and database programming
    • Database replication and clustering
      • Install, configure and manage Oracle HA solutions including Data Guard, RAC
      • Install, configure and manage MySQL HA installations including multi master-master replication and monitoring
      • Oracle Database backup and recovery procedures, backup and recovery strategies (RMAN, SRDF, BCV split)
    • Database performance and tuning procedures
      • Table space consumption, table space fragmentation, index analysis
    • Industry best practice in relation to database administration
    • Linux operating environment
